iriver x20 debuts

Iriver-X20

If the 8GB flash memory is not enough, you can always pop in a microSD card to expand upon it. The 2.2" 260k color LCD display works great for displaying photos and videos (MPEG 4, AVI, and WMV), while a 5-way control pad makes navigation a snap. Other features include an integrated FM tuner, a microphone, and support for MP3, WMA, and OGG audio files.

Fruit-flavoured ports from non-fruit audio player

There is a very amusing thread going on over at the AnythingButIpod forums. Well worth a read, and makes you want to go out and fine someone with a Zen Vision:M (good luck with that :P).

Take out your Creative Zen Vision:M and smell the bottom data port. What does it smell like? Bubblegum, blueberries, fruit, something sweet? You won’t believe it until you have smelled it, but it undoubtedly smells colorfully sweet. Really . . . go find a ZVM and smell it or better yet if you have one, walk around sticking your ZVM's data port in other people's noses and ask them what they think it smells like.

Creative Zen Wav, speakers not required

Zen Wav2

As you can see from the picture, the player comes with an "Acoustic stand". According to Creative, the acoustic stand is "a unique docking station ...that allows the MP3 player to emit rich concentrated sound waves, providing better audio quality and entertainment to the listener". Sounds good to me. The player will debut at Creative's upcoming Warehouse sale in Singapore (May 25th -27th) and as of right now it will only be sold there.

iriver S10 - 2GB shuffle competitor

Sc001

Despite its size, the S10 feels solid and weighty even with its plastic body. We didn't like the bundled earphones, however. Though the cutesy S10 deserves to be worn around the neck, the lanyard earphones lack the chic factor of the iriver N10 ensemble. Unlike the N10, there isn't a clip to secure the earphones when not in use or an option to use the lanyard with the user's own earphones.

What the Zune needs to do to defeat iPod

Zune Ipod

The world's largest technology company has been getting buried under criticism across many of its products for over-management and embarrassing under-performance. While the Zune in its current implementation might fit that bill, change could easily be on the menu at Redmond (or it had darn well better be). They have the chance to turn their player into a polished example of inspired innovation that benefits everyone - the industry, the market and consumers. Now that would be something to write about.

Sandisk Sansa E200 reviewed - good but expensive

Sandisk-Sansa E200 E200-1 We were reading through LordPercy's thorough review when this sentence caught our eye:

Sadly all media has be be pushed through the supplied software (including images, even JPEGS) before they can successfully be viewed on the Sandisk player.

Which is, needless to say, a lousy implementation. We can only imagine that the JPEGs are being resized (and possibly optimised?). The review concludes:

Overall we were very impressed with Sandisks efforts and the Sansa E200 series is a worthy player for your attention and something a bit different to consider when looking at the more obvious iPod Nano and Creative V Plus. It's advantage should be price but at the time of writing the 6gb model is still being held at £154 which is iPod money. However Sandisk have confirmed that n 8gb model is due very soon and this will almost certainly lead to a price drop in the rest of the range which also includes 2gb and 4gb models.

Toshiba 1089 unmasked as MS's Zune

Zunefront-1-1

Well, here's a bit of a surprise: a wireless PMP just showed up on the FCC, featuring a 30GB HDD, FM tuner and a strangely familiar 3-inch screen. And it ain't being manufactured by Microsoft. Instead it looks like Microsoft got their good pal Toshiba to produce the Zune, which not only saves Microsoft the job of gearing up some production lines for the thing, but seems to keep them from stepping on at least one PlayForSure licensee's toes.
